Oukikyo: A Renovated House Inspired by Cherry Blossoms

Bringing the Beauty of Nature into a Modern Living Space

Inspired by the traditional Japanese painting "Yozakura Gekka" by Hiroshi Senju, designer Atsumasa Tamura created Oukikyo, a renovated house that captures the essence of cherry blossoms and the four seasons. With its unique design and incorporation of traditional elements, Oukikyo offers a tranquil and elegant living experience.

Oukikyo was born out of the owner's desire to have a private space where he could admire the beauty of cherry blossoms, much like the painting that inspired it. The goal was to create a simple yet luxurious atmosphere reminiscent of a high-end hotel. The design focused on the living room, study room, and bedroom, with each space carefully crafted to evoke a sense of tranquility.

What sets Oukikyo apart is its incorporation of nature and the four seasons. The painting represents spring, and this theme is carried throughout the house. In summer, hemp leaf patterns adorn the sliding doors, allowing soft light to filter through the patterned paper screens. In autumn, maple leaves decorate lacquered panels, adding warmth and depth to the space. For winter, pine-needle patterns are woven into silk on the ceiling, symbolizing endurance and complementing the cherry blossoms. Even the flowing pattern on the side door represents water, hinting at the bathroom facilities behind it.

The realization of Oukikyo involved the use of hinoki cypress, a delicate wood known for its refined texture and natural finish. This wood was used for both the interior and newly designed furniture, creating a seamless blend of modern and traditional Japanese styles. The floor is covered in Botticino Classico marble stones, further enhancing the fusion of old and new.

Technical specifications of Oukikyo include a single-story wooden building with a site area of 235m2 and a total floor space of 66m2. The renovation project began in Wakayama city, Japan, in April 2017 and was completed in April 2018.

Oukikyo has received recognition for its exceptional design, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

With Oukikyo, Atsumasa Tamura has created a living space that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity. By incorporating the beauty of cherry blossoms and the four seasons, Oukikyo offers a sophisticated yet natural environment where the owner can find tranquility and appreciate the timeless elegance of nature.
